An Apprentice Mindset vs. a Professional Mindset

I attribute this post to a client who deeply inspired me during one of our sessions. He spoke about the attributes of being an apprentice. Afterwards as I was unpacking the session on paper it hit me that an apprenticeship mindset could be a great strategy to deal with failure and frustration on the job but not only on the job.

Think about this for a minute; what does it mean to have an apprenticeship mindset? What happens when we are an apprentice? We're in training to learn to become skilled at something. We're open to learning and growth yet also allowing ourselves to make mistakes because your mindset is one of learning a skill that we don't know as opposed to a professional. We tend to be less judgmental of our results because we understand that we're on a learning curve and our self expectations are lowered.

What happens when we become a professional at something? We're skilled and are supposed to know right?  We have a natural tendency to think we should have known when we make a mistake and when mistakes occur we take it to a more severe degree of self judgment don't we? Our self expectations benchmark is automatically raised when we have a professional mindset.

If we could adopt the apprenticeship mindset of life learning and growth yet be a skilled professional at what we do there would be a significant paradigm shift towards a more learning and growth orientated type of mindset, less self judgment and more flexibility with the expectations we set for ourselves; yet with all the professional skills at hand.

Churchill once said: "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm".

Maybe if we tried to adopt an apprentice mindset where mistakes are part of the process we could live this quote through to reach the goals and success we strive so hard to achieve?

The Pesach Potential

Pesach is symbolic of the potential that exists in each one of us – the ability to make decisions from a place of freedom and choice.
Pesach is symbolic of the junction that we all come to from time to time in our lives – making responsible choices that forge our future destiny.

I invite you to think about your choices and decisions that you have made and will make in the future; and ask yourself if you made your choices from a place of freedom and responsibility for your own destiny?

May you and yours have a happy chag.

"Name it Claim it Aim it"

3 Short Steps for choosing the "right" JOB

Discover and NAME your own internal strengths and values, CLAIM them and AIM them to find a job that you excel in and feel is right for you.

Name it: What are personal strengths and values?
Strengths are your very own unique combination of talents, knowledge and skills. You can use your strengths to maximize your potential and position yourself to do what you do best everyday. People who are able to use their talents and abilities naturally excel. People who use their strengths everyday are 6 X more likely to be engaged on the job. (Statistical information taken from Gallup Strengths Center).

Personal values guide our decision making. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They help you determine your priorities and they are probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is usually good – you're satisfied. But when things don’t align with your values that’s when things feel wrong. For example if you value family, but work a 70 hour week in your job you will feel internal stress and conflict. When you’re aware of your values you can make decisions about how to live your life and are able to answer questions like;

1) What job should I pursue?
2) Should I accept this promotion?
3) Should I start my own business?

A combination of strengths and values coupled with the ideal task or job can create "flow"* – something you definitely want to aim to accomplish. Flow is when a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. You don't notice the time it took to do the task you set yourself.

Now your task is to NAME your top 5 Strengths. Make a list of the top 5 things you excel in professionally. Then NAME the top 5 Values according the following guiding question:
Identify times you were fulfilled, happy, found meaning and satisfied?
What values were present that made you fulfilled and satisfied?

Claim it: Claim and internalizing your unique strengths and values. An exercise for you to do that will help you internalize and claim your strengths and values on the way to aiming for the right job. Draw a 90 degree right angle where on one side has a list of all your strengths and the other side has a list of all your values. Then open the web and look for job descriptions that align your strengths and your values with the job descriptions. Plot the title of the jobs between the two sides of the right angle and look to see if new directions have opened up for you in your job search.

Aim it: Harnessing your strengths and values by aiming them to set up job networking meetings, re-writing your C.V. according to new job opportunities, sending your C.V to the right places. Start focusing on what you really want. You'll see that because of these realizations and new focus you will feel more determined to seek out the "right" job for you because you know what you're good at and what you fundamentally believe is the right step forward for you.

* Flow - A concept proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, from the area of positive psychology.

Tips: How to find Life Balance

Balance – feels like breathing in a breath of fresh air entering your lungs, penetrating your cells and releasing positive energy outwards allowing our whole body to breath.  It creates stability, calm, equilibrium, poise and lots of other adjectives that maintain our sanity and self assurance. Yet it's really easy to become unbalanced in our day to day life that tends to sometimes tip us over the scale and jeopardize our status quo.

What do we do then in order to get back on track and save ourselves from falling off the edge?

1) Mindfulness exercises such as RAIN & STOP. Mindfulness is mainly attentive awareness of the reality of things (especially of the present moment) is an antidote to delusion and is considered as such a 'power'. This faculty becomes a power in particular when it is coupled with clear comprehension of whatever is taking place. Dr. Elisha Goldstein, (Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist),  writes in his blog: “Difficult Emotions: One Approach You’ll Want to Try", about R.A.I.N & STOP.

“R” is to recognize when a strong emotion is present. “A” is to allow or acknowledge that it is indeed there. “I” is to investigate and bring self-inquiry to the body, feelings, and mind, and “N” is to non-identify with what’s there. This non-identification is very useful in that it helps to deflate the story and cultivates wise understanding in the recognition that the emotion is just another passing mind state and not a definition of who you are. Utilizing R.A.I. N. as a practice can help you bring space to be with things as they are and grow in deeper understanding of what drives, underlies or fuels our fears, anger, and sadness in the search for balance.

2) S.T.O.P. Next time you find your mind is racing with a feeling of being overwhelmed STOP.
S - Stop what you are doing, put things down for a minute. T - Take a breath. Breathe normally and naturally and follow your breath coming in and of your nose. You can even say to yourself “in” as you’re breathing in and “out” as you’re breathing out if that helps with concentration. O - Observe your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You can reflect about what is on your mind and also notice that thoughts are not facts and they are not permanent. If the thought arises that you are inadequate or overwhelmed, just notice the thought, let it be, and continue on. Notice any emotions that are there and just name them. Just naming your emotions can have a calming effect. Then notice your body. Are you standing or sitting? How is your posture? Any aches and pains. P - Proceed with something that will support you in the moment in order to get back on track.

3) For those of you who want to take time out, Meditation with Self Guided Imagery is a powerful tool that helps us alternate our reality and gain new insights and perspectives on our lives.

So next time you're feeling off course, unbalanced and overwhelmed with emotion or stress try any of these simple methods to help you see your shining light.

They work. Good Luck!

Fear of Losing Control; Fear of TOO much Control. Where are you?

What is control? What do we need to control? What is controlling us?
Control is managing; organizing; being in command; having power and jurisdiction. We can influence and dominate when we're in control.

Have you ever thought about why we need control? Control gives us a sense of security, a sense of direction. We know where we're going; we know what we want to do; it gives us clarity; it feels good; it stabilizes us. Control helps us to feel in control of our lives doesn't it?

Are we really in control of anything or does it give us a FALSE sense of security? Why do we fear losing control or fear too much control?

I want to suggest that I think control is an issue in our lives because it's gotten out of balance. Ask yourself honestly is control managing me or am I managing control in my life?

When we reach unbalanced levels of control in our lives, by striving for more and more control or by feeling victim to control that is self perpetuated or perpetuated by others we tend to feel overwhelmed; insecure; out of sink; depressed; stifled; stuck and other such feelings that are not stimulating positive thoughts to help us move forward.
We also tend to look for things that give us security and comfort when we feel that sense of "stuck" that can also lead to hampering our development such as over eating, turning to addictive substances such as cigarettes, coffee or worse… Our behavior can also become erratic and unbalanced.

What can we do to balance ourselves in order not to lose control of who we are and what we want to achieve?
Self awareness is the key and our starting point.
I want to suggest that you try and work your way through these four short exercises as a starting point.
1) Take out a big sheet of paper. Write the word control in the middle and within a three minute period and without thinking too much write down as many words that you associate with the word control. Read it over. It's remarkable how we become more self aware just be doing this small exercise.
2) Take out another piece of paper – fold it in half. On one side write down gains and on the other side write down losses. Make a list of what you gain from being in control and what you lose from being in control? Ask yourself what is working and what isn't working for me?
3) Then ask yourself what small change can I make starting today to create balance in the area of control in my life?
4) Ask yourself if control is managing you or you are managing it?

Good Luck!!!!!

"Strength in Numbers"

Winston Churchill said "If we are together nothing is impossible"…
There is strength and safety in numbers that you can't find when you're alone.
When you're part of a group you feel more invincible, you feel protected, you feel more courageous and motivated to do and try new ideas than if you were alone.
Man was not created to be alone. We are look to find communion and be together all our lives.
Through my experience in coaching individuals and coaching groups I can see a significant added value that a group has when embarking on a process of change.
The group becomes a mirror, a sea full of ideas and practical tips for success, a support and comfort for what's hard to deal with and change and a major and dynamic catalyst for the change process to happen.

Think about the times you felt safe, motivated and courageous to face up to the challenges life offers us – were you part of a group, family, team, community, movement?....
Here's a quote by one of the people I coached in a group setting" "The group in an integral part of the process, It was amazing to hear different perspectives and insights form group members. The group became like a mirror always reflecting where I am at a given moment. It's true that group work means everyone has less air time to express themselves, but I think it's worth it because you gain so much".

I don't know how you're feeling; I feel that we are moving closer and closer to the WE generation – where knowledge, progress and change happen through numbers, through communal gatherings rather than through individuals. What do you think?
Please let me know?

Captive in our own paradigms of thought – a lesson learned from Gilad Shalit's release

Last Tuesday when Gilad Shalit returned home it was a profound moment in Israeli society and for Israeli society on so many levels. The event touched the hearts and raw nerves of a whole nation. We witnessed the drama as well as participated in the drama of his return. I've been living in Israel for the past 18 years and only twice have I felt such absolute intense national spirit. The first time was when Itzchak Rabin Z"L was murdered and last week when Gilad returned home.

After these major events occur you can't help but ask yourself what do I learn from this event for myself. I began to think about captivity and what it must be like to be trapped. For Gilad the feeling of being trapped was all encompassing. For me I thought; am I trapped anywhere in my life? Am I captive to anyone, to an idea, to a dream, to a value, to a thought process or to a certain behavior pattern?

Sometimes I find that I fall into the trap of my own paradigms of thought which lead me to act in ways that stunt my growth in many areas of my life. Does this happen to you?

A paradigm is usually framed by a declaration like "to succeed I must work really hard" or "if I want something done I must do it myself" or "I will only begin to grow professionally when my children are older" or "there is no room for mistakes". These are very strong declarations that we say to ourselves and to others. They trap us and don't allow us to see things differently or to create new and fresh perspectives in our lives. Sometimes we carry these very strong and very influential declarations with us all our lives even though deep down we know that they don't reflect us anymore and that they hinder our personal growth.

What can we do in order not to fall into our own traps? Firstly, being aware of our paradigms of thought is the most important thing we can do to help ourselves. Awareness is the key as well as a tool that we can use for self reflection.
Ask yourself if you are trapped by your own paradigms of thought? What do they sound like? Write them down and ask yourself if they are really true? Do they work for you or do they work against you? Do you want to re-word them to make them more relevant for your personal development and help yourself grow?

The process of transforming paradigms of thought that stunt our growth is deep and requires professional assistance, however it is possible, it's PROFOUND and it's FREEING.

Don't let yourself be trapped and held captive by paradigms of thought that YOU yourself CAN influence and CHANGE tomorrow.
